IMI Vintage & Classic Car Show

South East Region display at the 3rd Annual Charity IMI Vintage & Classic Car Show , 18th September 05

or BMW CC SE Stand and Deliver for the Wicked Lady

Our only disappointment on the day was that as we were leaving the event we met up with Andrey Terebenin and friends from the BMW Club Saint Petersburg, Russia. Who had been held up on their journey from Scotland. But we did get a photograph in front of the Bayford Church. Andrey explained that they have travelled around 8,000miles since we last saw them in Luxembourg.

Once again Gordon Hyam with his concours winning E30 325i won best 1986+ car of the show (well done Gordon), and John Morrish presented him with the engraved trophy and he took the microphone and explained about his car and also about the BMW Car Club.

Other attractions at the show was the Enfield Carnival Float, Whitewebbs museum mobile shop and the raffle with a top prize of a Castrol Driving Experience , 2nd prize was a portable DVD player, 3rd prize a AutoGlym car care Hamper, plus many other prizes. Well all I say is the BMWCC members are a luckily lot, as we not only took second prize DVD player our group took five other prizes as well!

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is the professional association for individuals employed in the motor industry and the leading awarding body for qualifications in the automotive sector. The IMI offer the widest range of motor industry qualifications, including, NVQs, Technical Certificates, IMI National (VRQs). Disciplines include technical, sales, parts and customer service qualifications. There are 25,000 individual IMI members, from across all areas of the motor industry, who are recognised for their skills and experience.

The IMI moved to Fanshaws in April 1964. Although the existing house only dates back to the 19th century, the Fanshaws estate has a long and colourful history. Henry VIII granted it to John Knighton. In 1635 it passed to the Ferrers family and following the marriage of Thomas Fanshawe to Katherine Ferrers ( the infamous highway woman known as the Wicked Lady) The family name whose name the house still bears. The Fanshaw line died out in 1694 and the estate passed though the hands of Henry Saunders and Charles Barclay of the banking family. During World War II the house was base to a Royal Engineer Bomb Disposal unit. In 1963 the IMI purchased the house, 6 acres of land and three cottages for £20,000. During the day there were tours of the house.

Time to take a look around the show and there was the one of the finest displays of Vintage and Classic cars I have seen, and the setting of the front and back lawns around the house made a photographic backdrop. The vehicles on show ranged from 1915 Ford Model T up to an Aston Martin Vantage Volante. Some cars of interest was a 1935 Singer LeMans Special which won the best home rebuild car at the show. This was meant to be a two-year project for Mr. D. Allen, but ended up taking 5 years, and you can see by the detail on the car it was worth it. Mr. C Spong won car of the show with his 1937 Lincoln Zephyr V12, also the Alfa Romeo and the Ford Model T along with the Yellow Rolls Royce Sliver Shadow stood out.

So though the SE E-Newsletter and talking to members at club events I soon had a fine display of BMWs to present to the show visitors. As myself, Selwyn Frostick towing the SE Caravan and Barry arrived at Fanshaws Mr. John Morrish greeted us and informed us that our display would be on the back lawn of the estate and that some of our club members has already arrived. We were soon set up and the tea was on the go (our thanks go Sarah for keeping us watered during the day). By the opening time of 11am our display was set with Peter Armstrong 2002ti, Barry Gordge Z1, Tony Calvert ZM Roadster, Aidan Winwood M5 (E34) Gordon Hyam E30 325i, Lionel Smith E46 M3, Selwyn Frostick 730i, Paul Lockley E36 325i SE, Kathleen Butler 320DSE, my 320i M-tech coupe and late arrival was Richard Baxter with his 3.0SCSL.Plus we had a E30 320 from one of the IMI members on our display.

Sunday 18th September 2005 dawned and it was yet another day to attend a BMWCC SE event, this was a new event for this year. Mr. John Morrish from the IMI had contacted me and asked if I could arrange for a display at their Classic Car Show. This was the 3rd year that they had arranged the show at the IMI headquarters at Fanshaws, Brickendon, Hertford. All proceeds will go to Mapledown School, Cricklewood, London & BEN (Motor Industry Charity).
