THE GOODWOOD RUN - 6th AUGUST 2006
Report and Pictures - by Melvyn Pettit
06 GOODWOOD RUN
Then after refreshments a drive to Frensham ponds, a local beauty spot, we have around hour to take in the sights, and due to the hot weather their many locals taking a dip and boating on the lake. Selwyn buy’s a Banana ice cream which looked inviting, and he buys me one, “only hope it does not spoil the meal later”. The last part of the run takes us down some narrow lanes and then all the group end up at the finishing point, which is the Jolly Farmers public house at Blacknest, and we arrived at the preset time of 4.30pm. Normally the restaurant is not open after the lunchtime until 6pm, but Tony had arranged with the landlord that we could eat at 4.45pm, so we had the restaurant for ourselves.
During the meal the landlord came over and asked if we would mind being in the publicity pictures that the new brewery were having done. So after the main course we make our way outside, the professional photograph arranges us around the tables in front of the pub, ask us to chat and act naturally, the only problem ,out our group of 17 we only have 3 woman in it, hope the pictures do not give the impression it a “pink” pub. So with an excellent meal consumed it was time to say our goodbye’s and make our way home. I would just like to thank Tony Calvert on be-half of all of us who participated in run many thanks for yet another excellent run.
Our first half of the route did not get of to good start because as we passed the open air-museum the traffic came to a stand still, we turn left, and even though Tony had run the route the week before, for the third time. We were being held up due to a Chilli festival weekend! Once pass, we were soon at our first stop which was the Prince of Wales pub, near Haselmere.
At 11am Tony gave the briefing, near the Vitra Café, there would eleven cars in the run, due to limited space, we meet up just outside Goodwood. All present and correct we set of and follow the car in front, making sure we not only keep an eye on the car in front and watch for when it turns off, but also making sure to keep an eye on the rear view mirror. So if the car is lagging behind slow down and wait so the following car can see where we turn off. So the speed of the group should be controlled by the tail-end Charlie, (who in this case was in a Porsche and new the route). Well that was the plan, but as club members know BMW drivers don’t use their mirrors!, so on a few occasions when the group split up we had to follow the indicators of tail-end Charlie, so we could return to the correct route.
Goodwood launched the NEW Breakfast Club in 2006 and on 6th August 2006 it was the German Sports Car display at the Breakfast Club
So instead of a Pub meeting in August the South East Region visited Goodwood and then completed a run arranged by SE Committee member Tony Calvert.

Once again it is an early Sunday morning start, Tony Pratt to me by 6.15am; I drive us to Dave Brentnall by 7.15am, then on to Goodwood by 8.30am. Tony Calvert said get there early, as he had visited the Goodwood breakfast club meetings before and the display areas were soon full. Well he was not wrong; the areas around the Vitra Café were full when we arrived. Found Tony to get our instructions for the run: meet up at 11.15am for a drivers briefing”. So we had time to grab full English, as we wait inline , spot club members Paul and Rex filling their faces, next table club member Ross Harris, then out came Barry and Ann , could not move for BMW Car Club members. While waiting advised, the full English was not worth the wait and £11, so we take a Bacon Roll and Coffee (£5). It seems a shame that Goodwood promote this event as “The Breakfast Club” and the food and wait were not up to standard.
It was time to take a look around the two a penny Porsches, more gullwing Mercedes in one place than I seen before and of course nearly every model of BMW. This event was billed as the German sports car display and the cars lived up to the billing. As we stroll around, meeting up with more club members, taking pictures and speaking to owners. One such was a German guy who worked for a German BMW dealership and had driven over in a BMW Z4M, he said it would have been a new Z4M coupe, but BMW AG did not deliver it by the time he had to leave, he was also going on the next days Goodwood track day as well.
The range of BMWs ranged from BMW 328, CSL, 2002, Z1s, Z3s, Z4s, Zms, Z8, 6 series, 635csi, M6 and a 635csi convertible. M3s all models E30, E36, E46, CSL and 8 series. These are only the ones I came across; due time restraint I am sure I missed some.
