BCE MEETING 2008, ENGELBERG, SWITZERLAND

SCHLUMPF COLLECTION AND REIMS AUTO MUSEUM

Report and Photographs By Melvyn Pettit

MULHOUSE and REIMS

SEPTEMBER 2008

It was now time to head home from our four-day stay at the BMW Club Europa meeting at Engelberg, Switzerland. Having stayed on for the International Z meeting also at the same venue, our Motoring holiday was not over as we plan to first stop-off at Mulhouse, France. I had last visited in 2006 after the BCE meeting at Saulxures-sur-Moselotte, in the Vosges region of France. Barry / Ann and Selwyn had not been to The National Automobile Museum, so we had to do this year as we were passing!

The National museum had an exhibition which was entitled “La Moto & La Cinema”. This ran from 17th June to 20th. October 2008.

On display were motorcyles that had featured in films

Two of the films featured were:

“The world’s fastest Indian”. Anthony Hopkins played the real life Burt Muno.

“The Great Escape “ Steve McQueen’s leap over barred wire fence.

Also there was a cinema area where part of the Films featuring the motorcycles were shown.

Monday 1st September 2008                             Schlumpf Photograph album

I was only a short hop from Engelberg to Mulhouse and we arrive around 11am. Having been to the National museum in 2006, the first thing I notice they have moved the entrance to the other end of the building. It still the original textile building that the Schlumpf brothers, Hans and Fritz started their Bugatti collection. To read the full fantastic Schlumpf brothers story check out the 2006 Schlumpf report

The vestibule now has a walkway over some of the Bugatti’s, at the end is one of the Type 41 Bugatti Royals. Once into the main building it was still the same layout as how the Schlumpf’s designed it.

With lunch taken in the museum it was mid afternoon before we left to take advantage of the joint ticket which included the train museum. The “Cite du train” was only a short drive to from Schlumpf Collection and is well signposted.

After the visit it was time to head north and find a hotel for the night.  We stop at Point-a-Mousson, as we did on 2006 trip.

Tuesday 2nd September 2008                              Reims Photograph album

Last day of trip and we make our way to Reims. Arrive at lunch time. Museum is shut and opens again at 2pm. Leave cars parked at Auto museum and walk down to take lunch near Reims Cathedral. After lunch we take a look inside the Cathedral, which is still has renovations ongoing.

The Reims Automobile Museum is situated in one of the surviving S.C.A.R automobile plant buildings.

The 200 vehicles, cars and motorcycles on display date from 1908 until the present day. The S.C.A.R. Torpedo in the exhibition is one of only six of its kind in the world today.

Also the 5000 model miniature cars and signs, badges and pedal cars. I also added to my BMW model collection, as I found a BMW Touring Car transporter lorry for sale in the shop.

After the visit we part company with Selwyn, as he plans to stay in Reims before heading off to Holland and the 02 meeting.  We catch 8pm ferry back to U.K, and another BCE trip is over.

Start to plan for 09 and Portugal.
