Another successful event was the “Wings and Wheels” weekend. The BBQ a The Wateringbury, Maidstone on the Saturday night, where Berttie the Manager put on his apron and hat and took charge of the BBQ. The evening weather was warm, so even though we had an area of the pub assigned to the car club, many members ate outside in the garden. Then on the Sunday, we were invited by the MG owners club to join them at The Kent Gliding Club open day event. Meeting up at junction 8 on M20, we had a convoy of six BMWs to travel to venue. Final BMWs in our area were: 3x 8 series, 2x 7 series, 2x 5 series, 2x M3’s, E36 Coupe, 2x Z4, Z3, Z1, 2x 02’s and a 1 series. The flying programme started at 1pm, so the morning was spent looking around the vehicles in car show area. There were fine examples on display. Also on display was a target drone and launcher, used for target practice. Unfortunately, the wind was too high for the model aircraft to fly; also, it was too blustery for the stewards to hold the “limbo bar” for the acrobatic flying team. It did make the flour bombing, and the bursting of the balloons very exciting! A few members were brave enough to take advantage of the trial flights in a glider, two ways to take off, being catapulted by the winch, or by being towed up. They reported it was great experience, and for a bonus the rain held of until after the event. We have Best BMW on stand trophy, voted by all drivers who attended, tie between Gabriel’s M5 and my E36 Coupe (4 votes each). So another vote taken by members left on site. And before you shout fiddle, I did not vote, but I won!
