This years themed marquee: “The Quest for Speed”

This year, theme for the Enfield Pageant of Motoring was “The Quest for Speed”. As Danny, Dave and myself, the BMWCC South East Region setup team arrived on Friday for this May holiday weekend event, we were privileged to view the arrival of the main attraction for the display marquee. This being the latest project from Richard Noble and his team. Having with driver Andy Green set the current Land Speed record of 763 mph in Thrust SSC (Super Sonic Car), they are now going to attempt in 2012, a Land Speed Record of 1,000 mph in less than 50 seconds. These trailblazers with a Bristol based engineers hope to do this in Bloodhound SSC. Fast facts about Bloodhound SSC: Speed and Power ; 0-1000 mph - 42secs, Length of Track ten miles, 10,000 wheel RPM, 4½ football pitches in one second. three Engines: Jet EF200 (Euro Fighter) 90kN thrust = 20,000lbf, Hybrid rocket: 122kN thrust = 27,500lbf, V-12 race engine used to power the oxidizer pump providing HTP to the rocket 800bhp. More information at www.bloodhoundssc.com

Highlights of the many exhibits in main area included: 1930 “Blower” Bentley from the Beaulieu museum, 1933 Napier-Railton  courtesy of Brooklands Museum. (Broke 47 World speed records between 1933 to 1937 at Brooklands, holding the all time record of 143 mph in 1935). Plus the musician and television presenter Jools Holland brought to Enfield his faithful recreation of the world’s first gas turbine-powered car, JET 1. Rover unveiled it to the public in 1950, it achieved in 1953 a world record speed for gas turbine cars of 152 mph.

Saturday dawned with rain, but I am pleased to report that it did not stop club members from coming. Sadly due to the weather the arena displays: motorcycling display team, Jet bike, etc were cancelled But they did take place on the Sunday and Monday, with the BMWCC South East Region invited to take part in the car club presentation. Club members: Dave Cooke, John Way, Danny Nolan, Selwyn Frostick and New SE Chair taking to the microphone to talk about their “Pride and Joy”, plus promote the club. Barry Gordge let the BMW do the talking, as he opened (dropped the door) on his Z1. After the presentation, our stand was full of the public checking out the BMWCC stand.

The Enfield and District Vehicle Trust, who organized and the profits from this event goes to help the running of the Whitewebbs museum, had again a large area for the Collectors Bazaar, plus the funfair including the “Wall of Death”, and even laid on entertainment for those people staying overnight.

The 75 motor vehicle and motorcycle clubs area, again stretched as far as the eye could see, as previous years there was something for everybody. The 2010 Pageant die-cast model, is of the Land Speed Record vehicle, the Napier / Cobb Railton Mobil Special, so another model for the collection.

Even with the inclement weather, it was another popular event. I just have to thank the club members who attended this year, Dave Brentnall- BMW 320d Touring, Dave Cooke- BMW 840ci, Selwyn Frostick- BMW 2002Tii Touring, Barry Gordge- BMW Z1, Richard Head- E30 M3 convertible, Anthony Howells- BMW E36, Melwyn Moore- BMW Z3, Martin Moss - BMW 840ci Sport, Danny Nolan- 1 series, Marie Nolan- BMW Z4, Gary Trew-Smith- BMW 635csi and John Way- BMW Z3. Sadly Clive’s five series blew a head gasket, so could not join us. Lets hope all is well for next year’s Enfield Pageant.
